Slip and fall accidents are one of the major causes of knee injuries that require immediate medical attention. While there are different types of knee injuries with varying degrees of severity, there are some commonalities in all of them.

The orthopedic doctors always try to use conservative treatment methods for knee injuries due to slip and fall accidents. Surgery is only performed in extreme cases where the injury is of a serious nature. It is important to know that knee injuries require a significant amount of time for complete recovery.

The knee injuries caused due to slip and fall accidents are broadly divided into four categories that have been explained below in detail:

  • Bone Fractures: Suddenly tripping or falling hard on your knees can cause grave damage to the kneecap or fracture the knee joint. Patellar or kneecap fracture is a serious condition that requires surgical intervention. However, a cast or brace can be used if the bone is not displaced from its original position. The ligaments connected to the kneecap are also affected as a result of the injury. Therefore, it is important to undergo physical therapy after surgery to regain normal range of motion. It takes several months before the patient can put all his weight on the affected knee. Patients with kneecap fractures are also at a higher risk of developing Arthritis and chronic pain.
  • Torn Ligaments: The ligaments in the knee also get affected when a person suffers a slip and fall accident. Meniscus tear is one of the most common tears that occur due to sudden twisting of the knee with the foot firmly planted on the ground. The symptoms of a Meniscus tear include extreme pain, inflammation and limited range of knee motion. Although minor tears can heal on their own, surgery is essential for a major tear. The surgical procedure involves removing the cartilage from the knee.
  • Sprains: A muscle or tendon sprain is a common occurrence in slip and fall accidents. The ligaments get overstretched and are unable to handle sudden stress due to which a person experiences sprains. Symptoms of sprains include pain, inflammation and bruising at the site of injury. Conservative treatment methods such as rest, application of ice packs and compression can provide relief to a great extent. If the damage is severe, the doctor might use braces to immobilize the knee while it heals.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries: A sudden twist or jerk can cause the knee to bend unnaturally backward and cause an ACL injury. A “popping” or “cracking” sound can be heard at the time of injury. The patient also experiences symptoms such as pain and inflammation. An ACL injury can be partial or complete depending on the severity of the stress put on the ligament. Avulsion can also occur in serious cases and this can lead to extreme discomfort in the patient.
